Public Market

This public market is located in downtown Phoenix (see Figure 5.1 on page 120), a few blocks north from the city’s old civic center. Unlike the emblematic supply markets in European cities such as Barcelona, Lisbon, Vienna, and so on, public markets in North American cities have declined and many have long since disappeared. Honorable exceptions are the public markets in Seattle and downtown Los Angeles.31 The public market in Phoenix was initially held once a week on Saturdays, later on also held on Wednesdays, and more recently it has been relocated to a permanent location.32
